BINYAM ZEMACH
Age: 5

Binyam is a 5 year old boy. His father died in a car accident when he was a baby. He has no family support. At times he begs for food and clothes on the street with his mom. He has not started school yet. Binyam has been sponsored by Ms. Shirley McCall since January 2006.

ZENASH ABEGAZ
Age: 8

Zenash is an 8 year old girl. She is being raised by her struggling single mother. Her mother supports herself and Zenash by selling small items at open market. Due to their hardship, Zenash has not started school yet. Sponsored by Mrs. Marian Price starting January 2006

SELAMAWIT GETACHEW
Age: 7

Selamawit is a 7 year old girl who lives with her grandparents. Her grandparents have no steady income. They send Selamawit to school with the help of their community and the charity of others. She is in the 1st grade. However, she misses school often due to a lack of necessities at home. Selamawit has been sponsored by Miss Shawna Ohumay starting January 2006.

ESKEDAR MULUALEM
Age: 5

Eskedar is a five year old girl. She lives with her parents in a small kitchen given to them by someone. Her father is blind, and her mother is sickly. They have no income, and depend on the charity of others to survive. To date, she has not started school yet. Eskedar has been sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Safari Ohumay, starting January 2006.

MICKEYAS DEJENE
Age: 3

Mickeyas is a 3 year old boy being raised by a struggling single mom. His mother supports Mickeyas and herself by working odd day jobs. They live in one room living quarter that was given to them. His mom is determined to put him to school as soon as he turns five years old. Mickeyas has been sponsored by Miss Quinyse Fowler starting February 2006.

Brook is a seven year old boy. His father is a day laborer, and his mother is a home maker. They are struggling to get by on a day to day basis. At times, they have only one meal a day. Brook has been sponsored by Mr.and Mrs. Anthony Githinji since January 2006.

Sintayhu is a seven year old boy. His parents are unemployed, and they have no income. They basically depend on the charity of others in their community to survive. Sintayhu has been sponsored by Mr. Orsam Ahmed starting December 2005.

Tigist is an eight year old girl who is in 2nd grade. She is being raised by a struggling single mother who goes out and collects firewood every day to sell them for a small profit. This is the only income they have and it is barley enough to buy food for her and Tigist. Tigist has been sponsored by Miss Abby Tesfaye since August 2005.

NATNAEL MEBRATU
Age: 7

Natnael is a seven year old girl. Her father died with out getting proper medical care. Her mother works as a day laborer to support herself and her daughter. Natnael has been sponsored by Ms. Cecelia Githinji since January 2006 .

Yisehak is a five year old boy who is being raised by a struggling single mother. They live in a shelter and his mother begs to support Yisehak and herself. Yisehak has been sponsored by Mr. Mark Price since March 2005.

Almaz is the middle child in the family of eight kids. She is an autistic girl who has many special needs. Almaz has been sponsored by Mrs. Tsige Chernet-Price since December 2005.

ASNAKU BIZUNEH
Age: 11

Asnaku is an eleven year old girl who is a 4th grade student. Her mother is blind, and begs to support her family. Not only is Asnaku indispensable to her mother as a guide, she is also an excellent student. Asnaku and her mother live in a church shelter, and depend on others to make ends meet. Asnaku has been sponsored by Ms. Haqikah Salim beginning in March 2006.

JERUSALEM ADME
Age: 16

Jerusalem is being raised by her single mother who works a day job to support herself and her daughter. Due to health problems, Jerusalem’s mother does not work full time. Jerusalem is in 9th grade, and she is a good student. She is currently participating in her school’s music program.

SAMRAWIT MISGANAW
Age: 13

Until recently, Samrawit was being raised her single mom. She never knew her father. Sadly, in 2006, Samrawit lost her mother to breast cancer. Currently, she lives with her relatives on her mother’s side. She uses the money from her KHNK sponsorship to pay for her education. Samrawit is an excellent student.

Eyob lost his father when he was very little. His mother suffers from asthma, but is doing her best to raise him and his two siblings. Although Eyob’s mother has to reduce the hours that she works due to her illness, she says that with the help of KHNK they are doing their best to make it.

BROOKTAWIT BELETE
Age: 9

Brooktawit lost both her parents when she was a baby. She is being raised by her elderly paternal grandparents. Although they do not know how to read or write, they ask others to help with her schoolwork, because she requires tutoring.

Samuel is being raised by his very hardworking single mom. He has one sister and he is an excellent student.

Tigist’s father died when she was young. Her mother is not healthy enough to support herself and Tigist. Therefore they both live with Tigist’s grandparents.

Mickeyas is being raised by his single mother. She washes clothes for other people to earn their small income. She plans to use the money from KHNK for Mickeyas’ education.

ASNAKU BIZUNEH
Age: 13

Asnaku’s single mother is blind. Since she had no education and no other family members for support, she used to beg to support herself and Asnaku. Since becoming sponsored by KHNK, she has stopped begging and Asnaku is enjoying school. She is an excellent student.

WONDIMU KUMSA
Age: 9

Wondimu comes from a very needy family. His father is unable to work and support his family because of a hand injury. His mother sells small items to support the family. Wondimu has one other sibling. The family lives in a small shack made of plastic. Due to their dire situation, KHNK has recently placed his sister on the waiting list as well.

AYNALEM BASHAW
Age: 5

Aynalem is being raised by her grandmother. When Aynalem’s mother was pregnant, the father made the decision not to participate in raising Aynalem. Aynalem’s mother fell ill shortly after, and moved in with her mother. Her grandmother sells charcoal in the street to support the family. After she was sponsored by KHNK, Aynalem was able to start school and is now in 1st grade.

FASIKA ABRAHAM
Age: 9

Fasika lost his father when he was very young. His mother works a day job to support the family. He has an uncle who supports the family occasionally. Before his KHNK sponsorship, “Education was unthinkable”, said his mother. “Now, thanks to KHNK support, Fasika is in 1st grade.”

NATNAEL MEBRATU
Age: 9

Natnael’s father was ill for a very long time, and unfortunately passed away recently. His mother works a day job occasionally to support the family. Since they do not have a decent place to stay, she and her son have moved in with her parents.

Brook is being raised by his struggling single mother. She and Brook live with the people she works for a little outside the city. She prepares homemade beer for other families to support Brook and herself. Brook started going to school shortly after being sponsored by KHNK. Says Brook’s mother, “He is happier now, and we are both grateful for the support we get from KHNK”.

ESKEDAR MULUALEM
Age: 6

Eskedar’s father is blind and begs to support his family. They live in a very small, one-room shack that they rent. Eskedar’s mom recently found out she is HIV positive. Currently, she is taking medication that the government provides free of charge. Eskedar, however, has been checked medically and was found to be healthy and free of the HIV virus.

Selamawit is being raised by her struggling single mother. She does not know who her father is. Both she and her mother live with her poor maternal grandmother. They all live in very small living quarters given to them by the government. Selamawit’s mom is not working right now.

KIDIST SINTAYHU
Age: 8

Kidist is the child of a teenage pregnancy. Her father claims that Kidist is not his daughter and refuses to support her. Her young mother left her with her grandmother. She does not know where her mother or father is. Her financially struggling grandmother sells some items in an open market to make ends meet and to raise Kidist.

MEKDES DEBEBE
Age: 7

Mekdes is being raised by her grandmother, who is struggling financially. Mekdes’ grandmother suffers with an eye illness and also suffers with mental illness. Due to her situation, Mekdes is currently not attending school.

BEMNET EDEGLIGNE
Age: 6

Bemnet is being raised by her aunt who resides in Addis. Bemnet was born to a 16 year old mother who was abandoned by her parents for disgracing the family. Bemnet’s mother lived in the countryside and was attending school where she lived. She was assaulted at 16 and that resulted in her teenage pregnancy. Her aunt, a single struggling mother herself, took her in and is currently helping her raise Bemnet.

Hamidu’s mom died during his birth in the countryside, and he never got the opportunity to know his mother. His brokenhearted father then came to the city in search of a better life. Though he has no steady job, he is raising Hamidu by taking any day job he gets. He is a simple country man, but he believes in the value of a good education. He has already put Hamidu in school and is grateful for KHNK’s support.

IBRAHIM HASHI
Age: 7

Ibrahim’s parents came from the countryside where they used to run a small hotel. For unknown reasons, their small business went under, and they found themselves struggling in the city. They live in a small shelter and depend on the charity of people they used to know. They firmly believe that this unfortunate situation is the result of a curse placed on them by evil people. After KHNK sponsored Ibrahim, he was enrolled in school.

YABETSE YOSEF
Age: 3

Yabetse is being raised by his hardworking single mom. His father died when he was a baby. Yabetse is a very happy child who is loved by and cared for by his mother’s relatives while his mother is working to support them. They live in a small one room living quarters with his maternal relatives in Addis Ababa.

KIDIST and MEKDES WORKU
Age: 13 ; Age: 10

Kidist and her sister Mekdes are being raised by struggling parents. Their father lost his eyesight fighting in a war. He was discharged form the military and receives small assistance. Their mother has no job and they basically depend on the assistance of others to make ends meet.

ESUBALEW TADESSE

Esubalew and his siblings are being raised by a struggling single mom. She works as a maid and they all live in small one-room living quarters with the people their mother works for. No information was given on whether Esubalew is attending school or not.
