Since our trip to Ethiopia in 2006, Kids Helping Needy Kids has been periodically supporting the Yesewasew Genet Aged People and Orphanage Center in the city of Debre Libanos, Ethiopia. The children sponsored by KHNK all live in the capital city, Addis Ababa. We came across this small orphanage in the town of Debre Libanos, which is located about 2 hours outside Addis Ababa. Once we witnessed the need of the children living there, we decided to do something to help.
We couldn't find enough individual sponsors for each of the 65 children living at Yesewasew, but we could start helping in a smaller way. After obtaining permission from the school, Mehron and Luladay began to run the "Christmas In A Shoebox" program at their school, The Calverton School, located in Huntingtown, MD. The high school student body was challenged with filling their empty shoeboxes with clothing, toys, toiletries, small wrapped gifts, educational materials, and anything they thought an Ethiopian child would like to receive for Christmas. They rose to the occasion wonderfully, and the program has been a great success for three years now! After collecting the boxes, sponsors and even some student volunteers from Calverton attend a "Care Package Assembly Day", where the boxes are checked for content, labeled, and repackaged for mailing to Ethiopia.
