Samrawit Misganaw

Until recently, Samrawit was being raised her single mom. She never knew her father. Sadly, in 2006, Samrawit lost her mother to breast cancer. Currently, she lives with her relatives on her mother’s side. She uses the money from her KHNK sponsorship to pay for her education. Samrawit is an excellent student.

Mekdes Worku

Mekdes and her sister Kidist are being raised by struggling parents. Their father lost his eyesight fighting in a war. He was discharged from the military and receives small assistance. Their mother has no job and they basically depend on the assistance of others to make ends meet.

Brooktawit Belete


Brooktawit lost both her parents when she was a baby. She is being raised by her elderly paternal grandparents. Although they do not know how to read or write, they ask others to help with her schoolwork, because she requires tutoring.

Samuel Eskias

Samuel is being raised by his very hardworking single mom. He has one older sister who is in college. He is an excellent student and works very hard in school.

Tigist Tekalign

Tigist’s father died when she was young. Her mother is not healthy enough to support herself and Tigist. Therefore they both live with Tigist’s grandparents.

Mickeyas is being raised by his single mother. She washes clothes for other people to earn their small income. She uses the money from KHNK for Mickeyas’ education.

Asnaku Bizuneh

Asnaku’s single mother is blind. Since she had no education and no other family members for support, she used to beg to support herself and Asnaku. Since becoming sponsored by KHNK, she has stopped begging and Asnaku is enjoying school. She is an excellent student and was recently awarded a full scholarship to a private school in Addis Ababa.

Esubalew Tadesse
 
Esubalew and his siblings are being raised by a struggling single mom. She works as a maid, and they all live in small one-room living quarters with the people their mother works for.

Wondimu Kumsa

Wondimu comes from a very needy family. His father is unable to work and support his family because of a hand injury. His mother sells small items to support the family. Wondimu has one other sibling. The family lives in a small shack made of plastic. Due to their dire situation, KHNK has recently placed his sister on the waiting list as well.

Yabetse Yosef


Yabetse is being raised by his hardworking single mom. His father died when he was a baby. Yabetse is a very happy child who is loved by and cared for by his mother’s relatives while his mother is working to support them. They live in a small one room living quarters with his maternal relatives in Addis Ababa.

Natnael Mebratu

Age: 12
Grade: 7th

Natnael’s father was ill for a very long time, and unfortunately passed away recently. His mother works a day job occasionally to support the family. Since they do not have a decent place to stay, she and her son have moved in with her parents. Sponsored by Mr. Christopher Brown

 


Brook Derese

Age: 12

Grade: 6th

Brook is being raised by his struggling single mother. She and Brook live with the people she works for a little outside the city. She prepares homemade beer for other families to support Brook and herself. Brook started going to school shortly after being sponsored by KHNK. Says Brook’s mother, “He is happier now, and we are both grateful for the support we get from KHNK.”

Bemnet Edegligne

Age: 9

Grade: 4th

Bemnet is being raised by her aunt who resides in Addis. Bemnet was born to a 16 year old mother who was abandoned by her parents for disgracing the family. Bemnet’s mother lived in the countryside and was attending school where she lived. She was assaulted at 16 and that resulted in her teenage pregnancy. Her aunt, a single struggling mother herself, took her in and is currently helping her raise Bemnet.

Aynalem Bashaw

Age: 10

Grade: 4th

Aynalem is being raised by her grandmother. When Aynalem’s mother was pregnant, the father made the decision not to participate in raising Aynalem. Aynalem’s mother fell ill shortly after, and moved in with her mother. Her grandmother sells charcoal in the street to support the family. After she was sponsored by KHNK, Aynalem was able to start school.

Haimanot is being raised by her grandmother, who is struggling financially. Haimanot’s grandmother suffers with an eye illness and also suffers with mental illness. Haimanot started going to school shortly after being sponsored by KHNK.

Tigistu is a fifteen year old boy being raised by his struggling single mom. She does not have a job. His younger brother, Nebeyu Habtamu, is also sponsored through Kids Helping Needy Kids as their mother makes every effort to educate her two boys.

Selamawit Getachew

Selamawit is being raised by her struggling single mother. She does not know who her father is. Both she and her mother live with her poor maternal grandmother. Her family lives in very small living quarters given to them by the government. They have no steady income but managed to send Selamawit to school with the help of their community and the charity of others.

Kidist Sintayhu

Grade: 2nd 

Kidist is the child of a teenage pregnancy. Her father claims that Kidist is not his daughter and refuses to support her. Her young mother left her with her grandmother, who does not know where Kidist’s mother or father is. Her financially struggling grandmother sells some items in an open market to make ends meet and to raise Kidist.

Marta Girma

Age: 8

Grade: 3rd

Martha lives with her aunt after losing her father early in her life. Her mother, due to illness, is unable to take care of Martha and asked her sister to raise Martha. Martha’s aunt is a struggling day laborer who desperately needs help in order to pay for Martha’s education.

Eyob Habte

Age:  14

Grade: 9th

Eyob lost his father when he was very little. His mother suffers from asthma, but is doing her best to raise him and his two siblings. Although Eyob’s mother has to reduce the hours that she works due to her illness, she says that with the help of KHNK they are doing their best to make it.

 


Fuad Abdulsemed

Age: 3

Fuad’s father was recently laid off from his job and is now working hard as a day laborer to support his family. However, he and his wife are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. They greatly desire their son to get a good education and have applied to KHNK in hopes of doing so.

Mintesnot Wondimagne

Grade: Kindergarten

Age: 5 years old

Mintesnot is the younger brother of Natnael, who is 8 years old. Their mother was a hard-working day-laborer, who died recently. Their widowed father is struggling to raise these two boys y himself. He works as a guard and makes next to nothing. Therefore, his kids are on the verge of dropping out of school He applied to KHNK to get support.

 


Danawit Bemnet

Age: 5

Grade:  Kindergarten

Danawit was born to a struggling single mother who was unable to take care of her. Her mother later abandoned her and she is now being raised by her aunt. Danawit’s aunt earns a living by selling small items and by cleaning other people’s houses. She wants to educate Danawit but needs help.

Lidia Legesse

Age: 14
Grade: 8th
Lidia’s mother died in 2009. Since then, her father has struggled to raise her. They are basically homeless; the two live in a plastic shack next door to a kind family who allows them to remain there. Lidia’s father does not have a steady job, but he makes a small living as a door-to-door salesman, selling knives. The family applied to KHNK in order to continue Lidia’s education and to afford a better place to live.

Efrem Negussie

Age: 10

Grade: 5th

Efrem is being raised by a struggling single mom. His father is deceased. His mother, Astatke Abebaw, has no stable income other than an occasional day job. She shares a room with another struggling family and is desparate for any help she can get. She hopes to educate her boys and has asked KHNK to help her. His brothers have been placed on our waiting list.

Kasahun’s mother applied to KHNK with a desire to educate her son.

Age: 6

 Samrawit lives with her mother. Her father is no longer a part of the family. At this time, Samrawit’s mother struggles to find a job to support her daughter and herself. Even though her main goal is to educate her daughter, she is finding it difficult to put food on the table and to buy clothes for Samrawit. Because Mrs. Shetaway has a child, most people are not willing to hire her. She is working here and there to make ends meet. She is applying to KHNK to seek support so she can continue to educate her child.

Nahum is currently being raised by his single mother, Marta Desaligne. At this point, she has no job and no other source of income. She has asked KHNK to sponsor Nahum in order for him to get an education. Now that he is sponsored, Nahum began school in August 2011.

Ermias Gebre and his twin brother live with their single mother, Ziniye Mekonen. Their father, Gebre Haile, left the family when the twins were toddlers. Ermias’ mother struggles to raise the twin boys by doing domestic work. Ermias’ brother, Kidus, is also sponsored.

Kidus lives with his mother and his brother. His father died a few years ago. His mother has health issues and rarely works. She gets very little support from family and friends when she asks. Since she is unable to afford rent, she and her kids live in one room with her aunt. She seeks help through KHNK in order to continue sending Kidus to school.
